What are Facial Fillers and How Do They Work?

The injection of a facial filler is a popular procedure for those looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore volume to their face. Facial fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are substances that are injected into the skin to smooth wrinkles and make them less visible. Injectable dermal fillers can plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours, smooth facial creases, eliminate wrinkles, and improve the appearance of scars. Injections can also lift eyebrows, enhance cheekbones, erase dark circles and soften smile lines. The most popular type of facial filler is hyaluronic acid (HA).

HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, so it dissolves naturally and gradually over time, generally between 6 and 12 months. Allergan's Juvéderm line is one of the best-known HA fillers. They are also manufacturers of the well-known and registered anti-wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin, Botox, along with several models of the most commonly used silicone breast implants. Galderma's product, Restylane, is another type of dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid. Like Juvéderm, it is a natural and biodegradable product that can give results for up to a year.

It can be used to plump thin lips, lift eyebrows, enhance cheekbones, erase dark circles and soften smile lines. Calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) is another type of dermal filler found naturally in our body. It is mainly found in bones and has a thicker texture than HA fillers. It also lasts longer than HA fillers, as it can give results for up to a year. Poly-L-lactic acid fillers are not a natural substance like previous fillers. However, they are a biodegradable synthetic substance that is safe to use in our body.

Because of this, they last much longer than previous fillers and can give results for up to two years. This product can actually help stimulate and rebuild collagen in the skin. Poly-L-lactic has been used in the medical field for many years in products such as soluble sutures. Sculptra by Galderma is an FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid dermal filler. It is used for smile lines, nasolabial folds and chin wrinkles.

This product is also beneficial for restoring volume to the cheeks or hollow temples. PMMA is another type of dermal filler that is not naturally produced but is a synthetic and biocompatible substance used in dermal fillers. It has been used in the medical and dental fields for many years. When used as a filler, PMMA is a microsphere found in a collagen gel that helps plump and support the skin. It lasts much longer than HA fillers. Injecting a facial filler is usually an outpatient procedure performed with anesthetic medication.

The procedure lasts up to one hour.
